Founded in 1549 by Tomé de Souza, the city was built on a high cliff overlooking All Saints bay, occupying great part of the current Historic City Center.
Almost three centuries later, with the runway of the Portugal royal family, which by the time was in war with France, Salvador became the first capital of Brazil, being the administrative headquarters of the colony for many years.
The presence of African slaves to work at sugar cane plantations culminated to establish a strong miscegenation that had reflected not only at the multiple races, but as well as at the rich local human culture.
With great development, Salvador is current one of the biggest and modern capitals of the country, but still offering beautiful and preserved corners, excellent beaches, unforgettable tours and an unique culture, where a great variety of arts, religions and gastronomy still survive.
