Brazil was discovered at Porto Seguro, by Portuguese navigators at the year of 1500, being that the reason why the area is now known as the “Discovery Coast”.
Divided into higher and lower cities, the superior part concentrated residential houses, public and religious buildings. Nowadays, some of those well preserved monuments stay open to public visitation, like the Nossa Senhora da Penha Church, the Town Hall and Jail – where the Porto Seguro Museum stays at – and the Discovery Mark.
Because of all the caring with these important historical buildings, the conservation of natural and cultural assets, including the maintenance of the native inhabitants’ reserves, Porto Seguro received the deserved titles of National Historical Heritage and Humanity Natural Heritage.
